The Maharajah and the Kohinoor

The Seer Project with ASHT, sampad and The Drum presents on Wed 15 Oct, 1pm & 7.30pm a touching tale of love and loyalty in the thought-provoking play, The Maharajah and the Kohinoor.

Charting one of the most illustrious episodes in British history The Maharajah and the Kohinoor follows the story of Duleep Singh, Maharajah of Lahore and King of the Sikh Empire, who was deposed by the East Indian Company at the age of eleven and sent to England.

Not only was he separated from his mother, but also his most prized possession – The Kohinoor, the world’s largest diamond was taken away from him to be included in the Crown Jewels.

He arrived on the shores of England and immediately became a court favourite of Queen Victoria. Encouraged by Her Majesty, the ex-Maharajah established solid relationships with the Royal family over the years. However, injustices and insincere intentions eventually drove him into the arms of exploitative meddlers who offered allegiance but left him isolated – He died penniless and alone in 1893

This event is part of The Drum’s Black History Month and also features a workshop and discussion for young people.

Deleep Singh was a Sikh ruler of the sovereign state of Punjab, and the Sikh Empire. He was also the last Maharaja during the Sikh Raj of Punjab.

Book now on 0121 333 2444 and online at www.the-drum.org.uk; tickets are £7 (£5) £3.50 for school bookings.
