The Drum is delighted to announce the members of their Young People’s Programme, Young, Gifted Brum will be presenting their first-ever theatre production, The Carnival which opens on Wed 14 April 2010 and runs until Friday 16 April 2010.
Based on the life of Clive, a 66 year-old bin man, The Carnival reveals how he secretly plots and schemes to become Carnival King. He fantasises about taking Birmingham Carnival back to the good old days when he ran the parade. But, unknowingly, Clive burns the hand that could make his dreams a reality.
The Carnival is a dazzling theatrical production which includes music from traditional calypsos to infectious RnB basslines. This family show includes costumes by Imagineer Productions (winner of the Artists Taking The Lead commission for the West Midlands Cultural Olympiad 2012).
The Carnival is performed by young people aged 8 – 18 years who have been participating in a series of dance and drama workshops at The Drum. “This performance is the result of a lot of hard work by the young people and I am proud of their commitment and energy to achieve so much in such a short space of time” commented Charles Small, CEO of The Drum.
The Carnival has been produced in association with Nu Century Arts and Imagineer Productions. The script has been written by the local multi-talented, poet, scriptwriter, director and songwriter TaN Matthews and is directed by Dan Donaldson.
Young, Gifted Brum Is funded by Aston Pride and provides a programme of continuous performance and multimedia workshops for young people aged 8 – 18 years from diverse backgrounds.
