Fri 26 Oct, 2pm Schools Matinee, 7.30 Evening Performance
As part of our Routes to Freedom season – a series of events marking the 200th Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, The Drum presents a provocative new play Slavery.
Slavery by Jonathan Payne reflects on the key role Britain played in the history of slavery. In particular, it focuses on how they drove the transatlantic trade of human cargo between Africa, Europe and the Americas. 2007 marks the two hundred years since the slave trade was abolished by the English Parliment, but slavery and its legacy lived on.
The consequences of the slave trade are brought to life through real testimonials of American slaves. Their narrative is fused with music evoking a strong passion for life.
Drawn from interviews with former slaves, this powerful play re-tells the personal stories of Black Americans who were treated like chattel instead of human beings. Slavery uses verbatim theatre to re-create their lives and is based on material orignally recorded in the 1930’s.
