Sabha – Celebration
Sampad is proud to present Sabha – Celebration on Wednesday 17th February from 7.30pm at The Drum, Birmingham. A musical expedition led by tabla and percussion maestro Mohinder Singh, Mendi.
Sabha is sampad’s popular showcase for local and emerging talent in music, dance, theatre and spoken word. This particular Sabha will bring together a unique blend of cultures to produce a vibrant, energetic and exciting new sound.
The first half of the show will take the audience on a beautiful journey as it explores musical traditions from all over the world; beginning with the pairing of the aboriginal sound of the didgeridoo and the ancient Indian drum, the pakhavaj; moving to the talking drums of Africa accompanied by the table tarang; before travelling to India, playing the traditional classical forms of raga and taal. The journey will reach is crescendo with the playing of modern Jazz music.
The second half of the show will see performances from Rhythm Thunder, the new album from Mendi which is being showcased that night, an album which features collaborations with some of Britain’s formost singers, MCs and which has been produced by two time Grammy nominated producer Paul Horton. Consisting of a dynamic expression of western dance music and percussive Indian classical and world rhythms, this performance promises to provide a fantastic climax to what will be an evening of fabulous entertainment that will bring together South Asian tradition with contemporary influences from the West Midlands and beyond.
