Return to the Caribbean

After the success of Streets Paved with Gold (2008), The Drum is pleased to announce the return of V Jay Theatre Productions with Return to the Caribbean on Thu 15 Oct @ 7.30pm which is being presented as part of our celebrations for this year’s Black History Month.

Return to the Caribbean is an insightful look at choices faced by senior citizens returning to the Caribbean after decades in the UK. The lead character is skilfully portrayed by the charismatic Victor Richards. As well as being an actor, Victor is a writer and producer of one-man shows which explore issues of identity, belonging and communication.

Laced with humour and wit, Return to the Caribbean captures the psyche of returning nationals and reflects on a time when British people openly celebrated and acknowledged the contribution Black people made to British society. At the start of the performance, we’re introduced to the character of Augustus Cleveland Johnson who returns home to Barbados after 50 years. After such a long time away, will Augustus stay in the Caribbean or will he decide to come back? Come and experience the cool vibes of the Caribbean through this heart-warming production. Laced with wit and humour, Return to the Caribbean is a “must-see” for all the family this Black History Month.

“We’re delighted to be working with V Jay Theatre Productions again this Black History Month. His performance is totally captivating and provides an insight for the younger generation of what life was really like back in the day. As well as being informative and educational, Return to the Caribbean has a real feel-good-factor so you’re bound to enjoy it” Jennie Gentles, Director of Communications, The Drum.

Throughout October The Drum will be presenting a series of events to celebrate Black History Month. The theme for these celebrations is called BirminStrong. Through BirminStrong, we examine and explore some of the underlying causes and tensions which seek to divide us along ethnic and religious lines. In doing so, we seek to reaffirm our commitment to making Birmingham united and Birmingham strong.
