New Generation Arts Festival _______________________________________________________________________________________

Thu 14 – Wed 20 Jun-(no performance on Sun) & Sat 16 Jun

The Drum presents The Good Person of Sichuan (Thu 14 Jun – Wed 20 Jun) and An Evening of Jazz (Sat 16 Jun) as part of The New Generation Arts (NGA) Festival. NGA is a two week programme showcasing up and coming artistic talent in Birmingham. The aim of NGA is to build a nationally recognised festival providing top quality graduates and emerging stars with a professional platform from which to showcase their work.

The Good Person of Sichuan is a fantastic new version of the Bertold Brecht classic, directed by Tom Wright and featuring a cast of Birmingham graduates. This powerful and funny re-working of Brecht’s drama explores the relationship between morality and identity in a contemporary ethnically diverse urban setting.

The Drum will also be playing host to An Evening of Jazz, spectacular showcase of Birmingham trained jazz musicians featuring the Alcyona Mick Quintet and friends. An alumnus of Birmingham Conservatoire, Alcyona’s style includes traces of Thelonious Monk and Lennie Tristano, along with influences from the European classical tradition. The Alcyona Mick Quintet has received widespread acclaim and recording success with the album, ‘Around the Sun’.

Pianist/reed player Dan Nicholls, currently studying at Birmingham Conservatoire, will be heading up a large ensemble combining electronics and live sampling with wild compositions written for his forthcoming album.

Organisers UCE Birmingham have worked extensively with artists, representative arts and community organisations, venues around Birmingham and education partners to provide a wide and varied programme highlighting the quality and variety of arts nurtured in the city. The festival represents an important opportunity for Birmingham to enhance its arts profile.
