The Live Box: Eska Mtungwazi
Live Box is a regular performance arts event, embracing live music, poetry, hip hop and dance, offering both emerging and established artists the opportunity to develop and perform their work, successfully breaking down barriers between high art and street culture, providing a relaxed and informal atmosphere for people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
Birmingham is bursting at the seams with creative talent. In recent years Birmingham’s artists have been gaining both national and international recognition for their work. The Live Box continues to support and nurture local artists, bringing their work to the attention of local audiences. This season’s programme is no different and will focus on the work of our extremely gifted home-grown UK talent.
Composer Eska Mtungwazi comes from a rich musical background. As a vocalist, her legendary virtuosity has attracted the attentions of a host of acclaimed artists – the likes of Tony Allen and David Sylvian, to name a few.
Her vocal arrangements have credits on 3 Mercury-nominated albums that range from hip-hop to indie to jazz. For her solo project, she chose to work alongside one of her most recent collaborators, artist-producer Matthew Herbert. Eska also leads the 80-voice Goldsmiths Ensemble who have performed with Matthew Herbert’s Big Band. This summer, she conducted a 150-voice choir for Bobby McFerrin‘s improvisational performance at the Jazz a Vienne Festival, France.
Live Box brings Eska Mtungwazi’s vocal talent to The Drum on Saturday March 26, doors open 7.45pm.
