Four Bulla An A Patty

To kick start our season of inspirational theatre, fun and entertainment, The Drum is proud to present the hilarious Jamaican comedy, Four Bulla An A Patty on Sat 4 & Sun 5 Sept 2010. Doors open at 7.30pm, show time 8pm prompt.

Following sell-out performances across London, the cast of Four Bulla An A Patty hit the road for a national tour and Birmingham is their first stop! Set in the fictitious town of Bell Castle, Jamaica, Four Bulla An A Patty follows the trials and tribulations of Breno a local guy who daydreams about becoming a superstar. He’s besotted with Tarama the daughter of Mr John who owns the local store. However, Mr John thinks Breno is a good-for-nothing lay-about and he doesn’t want him anywhere near his daughter. But that’s not all! There is a twist to the plot as we discover Mr John is infatuated with Miss Joyce who just happens to be Breno’s mother!

Incensed that his daughter is being wooed by a thug, Mr Jones hatches an elaborate plan to get rid of ‘Bad Bwoy Breno’ by offering him a once in a lifetime chance to become a recording artist. Opportunistic Breno willingly signs a contract and agrees never to set eyes on the beautiful Tamara again. However, the plan backfires as Tamara falls for Breno’s charms.

This bitter-sweet romantic comedy, written by Ricky Rowe (who also stars as Breno) is a remarkable triumph in contemporary Jamaican theatre. This smash hit comedy has been wowing audiences all over London. “We’ve sold out several nights in the capital and so we thought we’d take the show on the road. Birmingham, the second city, was naturally our first choice as it has such a large Jamaican community. Plus I’ve heard that the Jamaican track and field team will be based there during in the run up to the Olympics so I thought I’d beat Usain Bolt and get to Birmingham first!” joked Mr Rowe. “But seriously, because Four Bulla An a Patty is set in Jamaica, it’s a perfect vehicle for all Jamaicans – young and old - to see aspects of their culture portrayed on stage” he added.

Rowe’s love of brand Jamaica is reflected in Four Bulla & A Patty as he skilfully captures the essence of “yaad” culture through dialogue. This marks him out as being one of the most talented, emerging Jamaican playwrights of his generation and Four Bulla An A Patty is a real treat for the entire family. Four Bulla An A Patty is bound to be a memorable start to The Drum’s autumn season so miss it if you dare!
