Amina Khayyam in One: a presentation of Kathak Dance

The Drum in association with Zer0classikal presents Amina Khayyam in “ONE” – a presentation of Kathak Dance

Zer0classikal and The Drum have teamed up to present one of the most exciting Kathak Dancers based in the UK. British Asian dancer Amina Khayyam will be performing ONE at The Drum on Wednesday 5th May @ 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £8 and £6 concessions.

“Does everything really begin with one or is it that it ends with one?”

Time and ancient Indian philosophy has traditionally been conceived as a cyclic phenomenon with neither a beginning nor an end. Tala is the rhythmic expression of time in music, and dance is a repetitive time loop in which the beginning of the cycle flows back to its end. The rhythmic cycle forms a common backdrop of time shared by the dancer and the spectator, while the dancer super imposes layers of rhythmic designs on this shared backdrop of tala. These age old traditions share a sense of sacredness when they come together in their ultimate meeting point – the performance.

Kathak is a north Indian classical dance tradition dated back to 500 BC. It faced a transformation in 14th century under the royal patronage of Mughal rulers in India and here a whole new repertoire emerged in celebration of beauty and divinity through rhythm and movement. Today what we see is the amalgamation of both Hindu and Islamic tradition.

Through the use of costume, body, space and music, Amina will incorporate the magic of Kathak through ancient and classical dance vocabulary, but also add a global influence to the repertoire. Incorporating Nritta (pure dance) and Nritya (expression through narrative), the music and dance will take you on a memorable journey accompanied by a host of highly respected musicians…
