Abyssinians & Dillinger
The Drum’s Reggae gigs have been going strong for nearly a decade and are renowned in Birmingham as the best concerts outside of London, join us for this explosive, international double-bill!The mighty Abyssinians play at The Drum on Saturday 6th September 2008 (9pm – 3am) with very special guest Dillinger. Abyssinians music imparts sentiments of spiritual salvation, Rastafarian edification and African repatriation. The last time they graced the Drum’s stage back in 2005, the reverberations were felt throughout the Midlands and was hailed as one of the most memorable reggae concerts to date!
The Abyssinians are one of reggae’s most influential and spiritually uplifting groups. They have captured the heart and soul of roots reggae with their amazing harmonies, heavenly melodies and Rastafarian themes – all delivered with a deep spiritual feeling. The Abyssinians have released many records which have gone on to become international hits including the classics Declaration of Rights, Jerusalem, Let My Days Be Long and of course Satta Massa Gana, which became reggae’s most popular song of all time.
Supporting the Abyssinians is Jamaican dub-deejay Dillinger who found worldwide fame and fortune in the mid seventies with the hit single ‘Cocaine in My Brain’ which introduced the young star to an international audience. He was one of the first to chronicle and comment on daily ghetto love and life over a selection of the best rhythms of the time. His controversial lyrics have always carried his songs, whether getting a sound system pumping, making an audience laugh, or chanting serious cultural issues. With catchphrases such as "Jamaican collie make you jolly" and "Cocaine In My Brain," Dillinger had a string of hits in Jamaica before falling out of popular favour and, ironically, returning with an anti-drug message in the ’80s. Dillinger’s British fan-base has always remained loyal right from the punk-wave era in the mid-seventies to the present day; he has continued his successful tours at festivals and shows around the world to much appraise.
