The Double Bill: Ncamisa! Kiss the Women and A Face Like Mine
Ncamisa! Kiss the women is a breathtaking and explosive play directed by Peter Hayes and performed by Pam Ngwabeni. This play deals with the politics of transgression in Khayelitsha, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town. It depicts a world of light living and deep passion, casual violence and serious relationships, woven together with soccer and song. Welcome to South Africa, where an unusual lifestyle easily meets aggression and violence. Based largely on true life experiences, this emotional one-woman show is also packed with humour.
Asanda Phewa explores the many fragmented perceptions that Black women have of themselves in the lyrical and sensual A Face Like Mine, a deeply personal examination of what it means to be a young Black woman in today’s society, and also to dream of what it would be like to be white. A Face Like Mine probes the relations and tensions between Black women and white men, and also intra-Black on Black prejudices, in “the new South Africa”.
