Parallels

Award-winning dancer and choreographer Sonia Sabri is internationally renowned for taking a fresh and individual approach to the Indian classic dance form of Kathak. Her new production Parallels continues her journey, discovering new facets and possibilities in this rich art form.

In this sumptuous two-part programme, Sonia reveals two parallel aspects of Kathak, spanning from classical to contemporary and East to West.

Three fresh contemporary solos featuring choreography solos featuring choreography by the pioneering Shobana Jeyasingh and Lisa Torun, take Kathak to new places, from the depths of the mind to funky city streets.

Sonia then returns to her classical Kathak roots: rhythmic footwork, rapid spins, and intricate gesture, in a vivid performance combining the intimate and exuberant. She is accompanied by a virtuoso live musical line-up of sitar, vocals and the world-renowned Ustad Sarvar Sabri on tabla. Together dancer and musicians playfully improvise with complex rhythms, building up to a heart pounding crescendo!
