The Drum in partnership with CMAT presents Calypso Rose
It’s almost the end of summer… there is still warmth…There’s no better way to greet the autumn than with a strong drink of rum, some beautiful music and a classic film on the history of calypso with some of the greats performing. Enjoy this laid-back, relaxed evening of powerful entertaining calypso music, both on film and live. Watch Lord Superior; laugh with Gypsy and Lord Blakie; have fun with Harry Belafonte and Nat King Cole and dance with the Mighty Sparrow… and “the first Lady” Calypso Rose. After the screening, experience live, the lady herself.
Calypso Rose wrote the song Fire in Me Wire, which has since become a calypso anthem. Rose was the first woman to win the Trinidad Road March Competition, in 1977 with her song Tempo.
The evening will also feature a performance by champion steelpannist Norman Stewart and a screening of Calypso Dreams by Geoffrey Dunn and Micheal Horne in an abridged version.
