Bophelo
An exhilarating programme of dance pieces from Tavaziva Dance.
Bophelo meaning 'life' in Sisutu explores history, struggle, freedom, reflection, partnerships and power, fusing contemporary African and British dance styles and bringing Africa's past to meet its urban present.
Featuring two new works by Artistic Director, Bawren Tavaziva and original music by Tavaziva himself which creates a unique synergy between choreography and soundscape and a new work by Neville Campbell (ex-Artistic director of Phoenix Dance Company and Tumbuka Dance Company, Zimbabwe). Bophelo includes, Proud and Unprotected, Chivezwa and Mandla and a re-staging of last season's hugely sucessful Worlds Apart.
Chivezwa is a stunning piece inspired by sculpture, and presenting art's fluidity and stillness, its light and shade in a beautifully moving duet. This is a development of a short dance premiered in 'Soul Inspired'.
Mandla is a call to all to remember and acknowledge those who stood up against oppression, often sacrificing their own lives in the process.
Worlds Apart questions the lack of morality and manners in today's society and berates the lack and education and social graces for younger generations. It questions whether respect for one's elders and community spirit exists in today's society.
With a dynamic new company line up that draws extraordinary talent from all corners of the world Bophelo os a fully relised exploration of global themes and generation gaps delivered straight from the heart.
"Tavziva's choreography combines physical lushness with a determined ferocity." The Guardian
