Kala Shorts featuring:

Blacks Britannica (PG)

Dir: Colin Prescod (1978) 52 mins

Blacks Britannica outraged the establishment on both sides of the Atlantic and is one of the most suppressed films ever made in this country. As soon as it was completed, it was put under legal injunction so that it could only be screened guerrilla style in community and activist centres.

Described as being "bold , thoughtful and penetrating"; "the first film ever made on institutionalised racism", Blacks Britannica is a document on how things were on the eve of Thatcherism.

Step Forward Youth (PG)

Dir: Menelik Shabazz (1977) 29 mins

In the mid 70s British born black youth were still considered as immigrants. Step Forward Youth provides some these young people with an opportunity to speak about their experiences and attitude to being British.
