As an academic, Stewart Brown is constantly surrounded by the written word. In the extensive set of prints entitled Babel, he adopts and twists these words to his own purposes, layering them with paint and ink and drawing on his experience of African buses, Caribbean carnival and the sea of print and logos that is postmodern Birmingham to create artworks that are colourful, multi-layered ��" and above all, meaningless. In addition to the exhibition, Stewart Brown presents an artists’ talk about his work and critical studies of famous Jamaican and African literature.
