Call for Submissions: Black History Month 2015 Birmingham Brochure

July 30th, 2015

Black History Month was first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1987. Since then the month of October has been dedicated to raise awareness through events and activities celebrating our Black History. If you have an event, exhibition, talk or activity planned to celebrate this year’s Black History Month this is your chance to get involved …

The Drum in partnership with Birmingham City Council is the official organisers of Black History Month 2015 Birmingham. We are putting together a collection of events and activities offering people from all around Birmingham the opportunity to explore and learn about the history and heritage of African, Caribbean and Asian communities in particular their struggles, achievements and contributions. We are producing a brochure and website that will list events taking place in Birmingham during October.

The theme this year will be the 50th anniversary of the Race Relations Act 1965  , with the launch event taking place on Friday 2 October.  The Drum will use performance and talks to show how attitudes to racial discrimination have changed in Birmingham and the rest of UK since the Act was put in place.

If you have an event, exhibition, talk or activity planned to celebrate this year’s Black History Month, please email Paulette Francis-Green on p-officer@the-drum.org.uk for a submission form or alternatively download and complete the form in the below link and return to the same address as mentioned above.

The deadline for returning your form is Monday 10 August.

Glowing review by Birmingham Mail “…Simmer Down is the ultimate uplifting and family-friendly event.”

July 21st, 2015

Simmer Down Festival is over for another year.

As the fastest growing and most diverse festival in Birmingham, the Simmer Down Festival in 2015 attracted a massive crowd to the beautiful surroundings of Handsworth Park.

The free family fun-day festival which celebrates Birmingham’s rich cultural diversity by paying tribute to the centrality of reggae and other musical genres that make it such a city of culture.

There was a wide range of performances from local musicians and dancers on our second stage to reggae-bhangra fusion, lover’s rock and global reggae superstar, Maxi Priest on our Main Stage.

Off stage, there was plenty of fun activities for all the family including workshops, face painting, bouncy castles and slides for the kids, a community cricket match. There was also a showcase of Birmingham’s diverse cuisine at the various stalls.

We have an overwhelming response on social media as well as a glowing review by Birmingham Mail who said “…Simmer Down is the ultimate uplifting and family-friendly event.” Click here to read the full article.

Now into its sixth year Simmer Down has certainly established itself as part of the city’s festivals calendar.

Uncle Bens Block Party Guest List

November 29th, 2014

There’s just 3 weeks to go until Uncle Bens Block Party comes to The Drum, and we are very excited. We know that Christmas is a special time for family and friends to get together and be merry together, but it doesn’t always go that way for Uncle Ben! He decided it’s time to make amends so he’s throwing a party, he’s bought the party hats, crackers, booked a local sound system and stocked up on a few bottles of Rum…

So let’s go and meet the rest of his guests; the first person we’ll meet today is Robert’s mother Valerie, a single mother from Jamaica working hard to make ends meet. She is flirtatious with Ben and is on a mission to get him on her side. Robert and his mother don’t always seem to see things the same way!

Next is the ghost of Vivian, Collet’s mother, who sadly passed away shortly after having her youngest child Ryan. She was a very humble, calm, wise and gentle lady who loved her family. Collet has struggled with her mother’s death growing up and tries not to talk or think about it.

Last, but not least on the guest list is Simon, Collet’s first love! He used to live down the road from Uncle Ben’s family. Over the years he has grown up into a very successful businessman, setting up his own insurance company, which is now worth multi-millions. He’s been out of touch with the neighbourhood, but now he’s now back… and ready to re-kindle things with Collet!

Make sure you join us and get into the Christmas spirit, with our early bird offer only available until 5pm, Sunday 30 November, tickets to the party are priced only £10.50 (£8.50) and a Family Ticket for just £37.50*. To get your tickets to the party by calling The Drum’s Box Office on 0121 333 2444, or visiting www.the-drum.org.uk

* Please note that the family ticket entitles either, two adults and two children or one adult and three children to attend.
